CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town’s disaster risk management department has recorded a 200% increase in weather-related incidents between July and December 2024.
It said that its disaster risk centre was working to decrease this number.
MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said that nearly 90,000 people were helped during the six months in 2024.
He added that the city was doing all it could to prepare for the upcoming winter season, as last year’s was the most challenging on record.
"The current model is unsustainable. When SASSA decided to take direct control of humanitarian relief seven years ago, we raised a concern that it would slow down the provision of aid to those in need during times of disaster. That is exactly what has transpired. The city believes that the decentralisation of aid provision will allow municipalities to act more swiftly and decisively in times of need."
