JOHANNESBURG - The Tshwane municipality has welcomed an initiative by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to have its metro police department operate outside the capital.

During his recent State of the Province Address, Lesufi announced that all municipalities in Gauteng had agreed to pool all their law enforcement agencies together.

Under this new agreement, metro police officers will no longer be limited to geographic barriers, meaning the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) can cross over to Johannesburg and vice versa.

On Wednesday, Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya said that a formal memorandum of understanding still needs to be tabled and passed by council.

"There was a discussion that happened where all of us as municipalities were talking about areas we were unable to penetrate on our own. Case in point is Sunnyside where TMPD alone cannot do that work, we need the collaboration of SAPS, Home Affairs and other departments.

It wasn’t only us, (Johannesburg Mayor, Dada) Morero raised the issue of CBD and (Ekurhuleni Mayor) Xhakaza raised the issue of Kempton Park and we agreed as municipalities that we can cooperate," she said.
