JOHANNESBURG - In a bid to deal with the influx of "economic migrants" to the capital, the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality said that it has identified ten derelict buildings in the city centre to revamp for social housing.

The municipality has a housing crisis with the latest census data showing the city has the highest number of homeless people living in it.

Tshwane MMC for Housing Aaron Maluleka said that many people living in derelict buildings in the city centre want to be closer to work opportunities.

Maluleka added that this has necessitated the city to move its social housing near the city centre.

"We have a flagship project called Townlands next to Marabastad where we have accommodated people earning from R3,500 to R11,000 and that project has taught us many lessons that there are many people we should house. We still have buildings we have identified, and we are going to revamp, and they should accommodate people that are economic migrants that come into the city and want space."
