JOHANNESBURG - Superstitious magician and mentalist David Blaine plans to retire next year when he reaches the same age at which his hero, Harry Houdini, passed away.
Houdini died in 1926 at the age of 52, Blaine turns the same age in April next year.
In an interview with the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast last month, he stated that he is quite superstitious and that Harry Houdini, who has long been his favourite and a major influence, passed away at the age of 52.
"I've always felt that 52 should be the mark; you don't want to push until you break."

"I have a few more years to push before I switch to what people want to see me do more, which is magic. I enjoy working with children in hospitals, and you get the best reactions when you do that."
However, before putting his adrenaline rush seeking ways to rest, Blaine has another show that promises to keep viewers glued to their screens.
"I'm pushing the boundaries of what's possible by finding amazing people with extraordinary talents.'
His new show, titled David Blaine: Do Not Attempt has been described as a celebration of those who dare to push boundaries.
The six-part series follows Blaine as he experiences the world through awe-inspiring individuals in several countries, including South Africa.
"Learning from them has been an honour," Blaine remarked.
"As a magician, I'm amazed by their skills because, in my opinion, the most magical moments aren't tricks but rather the realisation of human potential."

The cultures, histories, and secret customs that enable these incredible abilities are all explored by Blaine in each episode. While shedding light on a side of magic that few have ever witnessed, he learns and tries to do it, so you don't have to.
The show officially premieres in SA on 28 March on DStv.
