CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town (CoCT) has assured the public that its fire and rescue services are fully prepared to extinguish and contain any blaze that occurs during the remainder of fire season.
Fire season in Cape Town usually runs for five months, from November to April due to dry and hot weather.
Safety and Security MMC JP Smith said they have sufficient resources to get the city through the last two months of fire season.
“Each fire station is equipped with a major pumping fire appliance, as well as spare fire engines, auxiliary resources such as water and foam tankers, aerial appliances, bush fire tenders, four-by-four skid units, Hazmat appliances, technical rescue resources, swift-water rescue units and other specialised support units. We are also able to call on 96 Wildland firefighters.”
Smith said more firefighters were available should the city require their help.
“The number of firefighters on operations throughout the 32 fire stations within the city’s jurisdiction totals 759. In addition, a total of 105 dayshift staff are on-call and available 24/7 should greater scene management be required."
