JOHANNESBURG - Joburg residents have been warned that power cuts will continue indefinitely until City Power’s infrastructure repairs are completed.

The utility is battling a major backlog in repairs amounting to at least R44 billion, citing a lack of commitment in funds from the government and other sponsors.

City Power’s executive revealed this during a media briefing on the state of its affairs on Thursday in Johannesburg.

Some of City Power's infrastructure is as old as 90 years, with structures like transformers only possessing a lifespan of 35 years.

The utility’s group executive, Charles Tlouane, admitted that the current backlog had been caused by the entity’s own delays in repairing infrastructures.

"These things, unfortunately, some of them we did not refurbish on time, but the organisation concentrated on expansion and that infrastructure programme based on the existing budget that we have, we move as we go."

While the winter period is fast approaching when consumption levels skyrocket, Tlouane said that for now, load reduction was here to stay.
