CAPE TOWN - The National Treasury has allocated an additional R46.7 billion for critical infrastructure projects in the revised budget tabled by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.
Godongwana previously indicated before February’s budget postponement that infrastructure continues to be one of government’s main anchors to grow the economy.
He said the additional funds would support projects approved as part of the budget facility for "infrastructure and investments" into areas like passenger rail.
National Treasury said the 2025 budget would direct resources to "growth-enhancing activities", particularly infrastructure.
It said the budget also advanced "regulatory reforms to support investment spending" as it allocated an additional R46.7 billion for critical infrastructure projects.
Godongwana said that over the next three years, public infrastructure would receive a major boost.
"Public infrastructure spending over the next three years will amount to more than R1 trillion. The spending will focus on three sectors - R402 billion for transport and logistics, R219 billion for energy infrastructure and R156 billion for water and sanitation."
Godongwana said the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) was making steady progress to rebuild its infrastructure and had been allocated an additional R19 billion over the medium term for "critical signalling upgrades".
