Major MyCiTi roadworks along AZ Berman Drive to impact multiple intersections from 12 March
Lane closures, traffic switches, and detours will be implemented in phases to accommodate the construction.
The City of Cape Town announced that roadworks along AZ Berman Drive are progressing as planned, however, impending roadworks and construction will be impacting multiple intersections as of 12 March 2025.
Lane closures, traffic switches, and detours will be implemented in phases to accommodate the construction.
Residents are to note that a traffic lane switch has been scheduled for 28 March 2025.
With construction on the northbound lane now complete, traffic currently using the southbound lane in both directions — from Nduli Street to Katjiepiering Street — will be redirected to the northbound lane between the R300 and Marguerite. This shift will allow for construction to begin on the southbound lane.
Furthermore, several temporary road closures are scheduled in the coming months to accommodate the ongoing MyCiTi infrastructure developments.
Motorists are advised to follow the designated detours to minimise delays.
Below are the details of the affected roads and alternative routes:
Furthermore, several temporary intersections and lane closures are scheduled to accommodate the ongoing infrastructure developments. Motorists are advised to follow the designated detours to minimise delays.
Below are the details of the affected roads and alternative routes:
12 March – 20 March
- Half-lane closures on the R300 On/Off Ramps
- The intersection of Sesame Street and AZ Berman Drive will be closed. The detour will be via Bottlebrush Street.
23 March – 30 April
- The intersection of Highlands Dr and AZ Berman Drive will be closed. Detour via Morgenster Road.
- The intersection of Marguerite Street and AZ Berman Drive will be closed. Detour via Pentuna Street.
Important things to note:
-
Public transport stops along the affected stretch will not be accessible to commuters during construction. Temporary poles will be placed along the reconfigured road to make it safe and convenient for passengers to board and exit during construction.
-
A temporary walkway and a pedestrian crossing with signalised traffic lights and signage will help people navigate safely on foot and avoid the construction area.
Some of the work that will be carried out includes:
- Sidewalk upgrades and street lighting improvements.
- Kerbing, channelling & new water main installations.
- Layer works and existing service relocations.
"We are demonstrating our commitment to Mitchells Plain and its residents through this significant investment into a world-class Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. We understand that the current construction is disruptive, but tackling construction work in a comprehensive, large-scale manner now means we can complete the project as quickly as possible rather than stretching out the inconvenience over many years."
- Rob Quintas, Councillor - City of Cape Town
"The short-term frustration is undeniable, but the long-term benefits will be well worth it. Once complete, this infrastructure will provide safer, more efficient, and more reliable public transport, transforming the daily commuting experience and unlocking new opportunities for the community."
- Rob Quintas, Councillor - City of Cape Town
"The City has implemented several measures to limit the impact on road users while these works are under way. At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction along AZ Berman Drive at all times. Work has also been scheduled to avoid peak traffic times and we will ensure that access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the construction period. Despite these efforts, work will inevitably add to congestion in the shorter term. We advise that motorists please plan for extra travel time and consider ride-sharing; lift clubs; public transport or avoid peak travel times altogether during this time. We can assure you that the inconvenience during the course of this major construction work will be worth it in the long run when the MyCiTi Phase 2A route is up and running and providing a safe, affordable and reliable public transport service to residents in the area. We thank you for your cooperation as we expand the MyCiTi services across Cape Town."
- Rob Quintas, Councillor - City of Cape Town
