JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli is set to launch an anti gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide app that will provide real-time emergency assistance and access to support services on Wednesday.
This intervention comes as a response to a 2020 declaration by President Cyril Ramaphosa that GBV has become a national pandemic.
KZN ranks fourth in the country’s reported rape cases.
According to the latest crime statistics, more than 2,000 GBV and femicide cases were reported in the eThekwini municipality between October 2024 and December 2024.
The Premier’s spokesperson, Bongani Gina, said the app would be used by pupils in higher learning institutions in the province.
"The app links the students with the security and as well as FAPS security at the university, as well as Nepal Woodwatch, and different spheres of security. They've all been made aware of the link and we're working together, and this is in a way before we see where it will be possible to escalate it and make it go to the whole entire province."
