CAPE TOWN - The GOOD Party is not in favour of the proposal to introduce more seats into the Western Cape Provincial Legislature.

This followed an announcement by the Provincial Standing Committee on Premier and Constitutional Matters that it's considering such a move before the 2029 national and provincial elections.

The Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Benedicta van Minnen said the goal of this process is to improve representation in the provincial Parliament in line with the province's growing population.

However, GOOD Party Member of Provincial Parliament (MP) Brett Herron said the proposal is absurd and disrespectful to the people, especially in light of the province's current financial challenges.

"With crucial services being cut, such as the loss of 2000 teacher posts, it is self-indulgent and irresponsible to entertain the notion of increasing the number of politicians."

He added that the introduction of additional politicians will only create further financial strain.

"The proposed constitutional changes alone will cost the province an estimated R4 million, not to mention the ongoing financial burden of maintaining more members in the legislature."
