DURBAN - An Umlazi man accused of killing his mother is set to apply for bail next week due to outstanding information.

On Wednesday, Sibusiso Radebe appeared briefly before the Umlazi Magistrates Court on a murder charge.

He was arrested last week in connection with the brutal murder.

The accused made his first court appearance in the full view of angry community members who were protesting outside, demanding that he be kept behind bars.

During the proceedings, he indicated his intention to apply for bail.

But his lawyer said that more time was needed to verify an alternative address where he would stay if he was granted bail.

Meanwhile, the social development department said it wanted the State to be strict when dealing with this case.

Spokesperson, Thuba Vilane said: "Matters of this nature, suspects should not be released on bail, we want them to rot in jail because we want to send a strong message to others that whoever does this will be dealt with."

The matter is set to return to court on 19 March.
