JOHANNESBURG - The Nancefield Dube West Taxi Association (NANDUWE) said it will not be operating in Soweto on Tuesday.

It's embroiled in tensions with the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA) over routes in Mofolo.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) members are back in Soweto to prevent tensions from escalating between the rival taxi operators.

They blocked roads on Monday between Orlando and Mofolo during peak morning traffic.

Vehicles belonging to NANDUWE are parked at the Crossroads taxi rank in Mofolo on Tuesday morning while law enforcement agencies are inspecting the area.

Commuters who have been inconvenienced by the rivalry said they are frustrated and stranded.

Meanwhile, NANDUWE's Joseph Ngcobo said they cannot operate until the dispute over which routes to operate in is resolved.

“We have been removed from work. Our cars are here, and they are not moving, and as a result, our commuters are suffering. They are telling us WATA has to work here because they have a court order.”

WATA said their taxis are still operating and no incidents of violence have been reported.
