JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers say they will remain in Mofolo, Soweto, to make sure that taxi operators are not blocking the roads.
Tensions are still high in the area due to a dispute between two taxi associations over routes.
The Nancefield Dube West Association (NANDUWE) said it stopped operations because it refuses to work alongside the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA).
The taxi operators blocked the roads on Monday between Orlando and Mofolo during peak morning traffic.
Taxis are on Tuesday morning slowly operating in the presence of JMPD officers in the contested area of Mofolo.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they are keeping a close eye on suspicious activities.
“The Johannesburg Metro Police Department together with the South African Police have deployed significant resources to monitor minibus taxi operations in Soweto today. This deployment is in response to taxi violence between WATA and NANDUWE taxi associations.”
NANDUWE and WATA took their vehicles off the roads on Monday in protest of working alongside each other.
WATA drivers allege that their vehicles were attacked.
