JOHANNESBURG - A 49-year-old woman from Mofolo is one of two people who died after being knocked over by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) officers in Soweto on Monday.

Her sister, who asked to remain anonymous, said her sibling died on her way to the hospital and was informed it was due to internal bleeding.

The pedestrians were hit by the JMPD vehicle after it collided with another vehicle.

JMPD was responding to an incident where taxi operators had blocked roads between Orlando and Mofolo.

The Nancefield Dube West Association (NANDUWE) is responsible for blocking roads due to a dispute over routes with the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA).

The sister of the deceased said the family is trying to come to terms with the news.

“It was hard for me because I was there in the ambulance with her. It is so hard to believe because when I first came to the scene she was laying on the ground helplessly.”

Police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened against the JMPD officers responsible for the crash.
