JOHANNESBURG - Nthabiseng Tshivhenga’s future as Speaker of the Ekurhuleni council hangs in the balance, as another motion of no confidence against her has been filed.

In February, Eyewitness News reported that Tshivhenga allegedly benefitted from kickbacks from service providers in exchange for government contracts.

This is the second time Tshivhenga faces a no-confidence motion this year, after surviving an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)-sponsored bid to remove her just two weeks ago.

This time, the proposal to have her booted from the city’s legislative office was launched by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

On 27 February, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Speaker of council in Ekurhuleni, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, survived a motion of no confidence after the IFP withdrew its bid for her removal from the position.

The DA questioned the IFP’s withdrawal and also accused the party of trying to protect the Speaker.

The official opposition has now taken it upon itself to remove Tshivhenga after sending a request for its motion to be heard in council.

The DA said Ntshivhenga cannot continue to occupy the position with a cloud of fraud allegations hanging over her.

The council is currently holding a private meeting to debate the allegations of graft in the Office of the Speaker.

Insiders have told Eyewitness News the council is likely to commission a forensic investigation into the matter.
