JOHANNESBURG - The programming committee in the Ekurhleni City council is scheduled to meet to consider the motion of no confidence against Speaker Nthabiseng Tshivhenga.
The committee will decide whether or not the latest bid to remove the Speaker should be taken to the council for an official vote.
The application for a motion of no confidence against Tshivhenga was made by the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The party claims Tshivhenga has deliberately neglected council legislation during proceedings.
The programming committee is tasked with determining council business and approving any item to be included on the council agenda.
This marks the second time this year that the committee has received an application for a no-confidence motion against Tshivhenga.
In February, the committee approved an IFP-sponsored motion against her, but it was withdrawn just before it was meant to be voted on in council.
DA chief whip Lucky Dinake expressed hope that this time Tshivhenga would be removed from her position.
"The integrity of the council has been absolutely shattered and any political party that does not support the motion of no confidence will be complicit in destroying the very essence of what we are here to do as councillors and representatives of the people."
Last year, Tshivhenga also survived a no-confidence motion after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African National Congress (ANC) came to her defence.
