JOHANNESBURG - The Nancefield Dube West Association (NANDUWE) has taken responsibility for the road closures in parts of Soweto on Monday morning.

Roads between Orlando West and Mofolo were closed due to what is understood to be a dispute over routes.

NANDUWE told Eyewitness News that it does not want to share the route with the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA).

Just last week, the Johannesburg High Court ruled that WATA could operate on the same routes that NANDUWE occupies.

Despite this, the routes remain contested, with the associations not agreeing to work together, a dispute that has been going on for years now.

On Monday morning, taxi operators blocked the roads of the contested routes.

The Nancefield Dube West Association’s Joseph Ngcobo said that they were not happy about the judgment.

"We have never worked on the same routes as Witwatersrand Taxi Association. We must make this clear that we do not benefit from working alongside them. We can’t share routes."

He added that they would not be operating until government intervened.
