CAPE TOWN – The South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union (SADSAWU) says government must take stronger action to protect women workers.

During International Women’s Day on Saturday, union members picketed in Salt River to raise awareness of the challenges faced by women in the workplace.

They said these challenges affect various groups, including domestic, migrant, disabled, and care workers.

General secretary Gloria Kente said their members feel let down by the government.

“We as the union, we are also very disappointed on our government, and also the department of labour, we are still demanding the dignity of the domestic worker and also the safety and protection, also we see ourselves as workers that are working in the domestic sector, as workers, like all workers.”

Kente said that conditions will only improve when laws are upheld.

“But we still now have those demands, because our government and our department of labour, they are not doing the enforcement of those laws so that we, all workers of South Africa, especially domestic workers, we can benefit.”
