CAPE TOWN - Just over 1,000 people gathered in Bo-Kaap to break their fast on Saturday evening.
During Ramadan, observant Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk, and traditionally gather with family and friends to break their fast in the evening.

This past Saturday evening, Wales and Rose Streets in Cape Town were closed off to traffic for the annual Boeka in die Bo-Kaap.
The vibrant streets were filled with rows of people just before the sun set. People of all races and religions joined the Muslim community in Cape Town for Iftar, the fast-breaking evening meal during the time of Ramadan.
At just about 7:15 pm, the street went quiet as they broke their fast after nearly 14 hours.

Couple, Lindiwe and Mpho Motaung were first-time attendees by accident. They came across the celebratory custom after returning to their hotel after a day out.
“We’re actually here for the cycle tour, my husband is cycling. It’s been wonderful, we were just sharing that we’ve been South Africans all our lives but we’ve never seen this ever so this is our first experience and we’re loving it.”
27four CEO Fatima Vawda, who sponsored the event, said she was happy with the turnout for such a special time.
Ramadan continues until the end of March.
