CoCT’s Smith says CT Cycle Tour significantly benefits the city's economy

CAPE TOWN - The annual Cape Town Cycle Tour is happening on Sunday, with 30,000 cyclists tackling three different routes.
In 2024, the event attracted over 10,500 cyclists, representing 46 countries, with South African participants bringing the total to 47.
MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith said the city’s economy benefits significantly from the cycle tour.
“As the world’s largest individually timed cycle race, it attracts around 15,000 visitors and injects over R500 million into the local economy annually. In 2024, 141 SMEs [Small and Medium Enterprises] benefitted from increased sales, with vendors selling food, beverages, and cycling gear. The event also created 3,280 temporary and permanent jobs in hospitality, event management, and tourism, further boosting the local economy.”
