CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town is hoping 2025’s annual Cycle Tour will surpass 2024’s fundraising efforts.

The iconic event, a staple for over 40 years, takes place on Sunday.

Participants can look forward to the challenging 109-kilometre race, starting at the Grand Parade and circling the Cape Peninsula, as well as a shorter 42-kilometre option.

Mayoral Committee Member JP Smith said the proceeds from the event would benefit local charities supporting the community.

“The Cape Town cycle tour is more than a race, it’s a ride with a purpose. Each year, it turns cyclists' passions into charitable contributions. In 2024, the tour raised over R300,000 for various causes, and we hope that this year the total will increase.”

Smith said the Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of the Mother City’s treasured events.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour is widely considered a resounding success, drawing nearly 37,000 visitors to the expo in 2024. This year will be the 47th edition, and that alone is a remarkable achievement.”

ROAD CLOSURES

Motorists and commuters are advised that many roads in and around Cape Town have been closed for the cycle tour.

Several roads around Green Point and Hout Bay have already been cordoned off in anticipation of Sunday’s race.

This includes the Helen Suzman Boulevard from Beach Road to the traffic circle, as well as the M6 Chapman’s Peak Drive from Noordhoek main road to Princess Street.

Multiple of streets in the city’s CBD, Woodstock, Mowbray, Wynberg, and Constantia will also be closed on Sunday morning.

The city has advised that MyCiTi bus routes will be affected on both days.
