JOHANNESBURG - Sentencing proceedings in the human trafficking case against seven Chinese nationals convicted for the kidnapping and forced labour of nearly 100 Malawians have been postponed.

The State and defence were expected to present arguments on mitigation of sentence on Friday, but the defence requested more time to review the judgement.

The group was found guilty on 158 of the 160 charges against them last week.

During Friday’s brief court proceedings, there were some changes requested for the upcoming dates.

The defence asked the court to relax the bail conditions for the only accused released on medical grounds.

“I want to obtain medical evidence about her prognosis and what her future injuries due to her stroke are so that I can put that evidence before this honourable court,” said Advocate Kruger.

The State did not oppose the request but asked that the accused report to a police station weekly.

Acting High Court Judge David Mhango ruled in favour of the defence and postponed the matter.

The five other accused will remain in custody.
