JOHANNESBURG - Over 10,000 cases of domestic violence were reported in three months in Gauteng.

Women are still disproportionately the victims of such violence compared to men in all categories.

5,628 common assault cases as a result of domestic violence were recorded, with over 4,000 of them being against women.

This while 2,178 assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm cases were recorded and over 1,400 of them being against women.

Provincial Police Commissioner Thommy Mthombeni, along with senior officials in the cluster, addressed the media on the crime stats between October and December 2024 in Johannesburg.

Provincial Crime Registrar, Brigadier Mpho Chakalane, said that the majority of these gender-based violence cases were in the Johannesburg district.

"So in terms of that 10,000 when we get the proportional contribution which we made by this district, the five districts in the province, Johannesburg is taking 37% of that with 3,805. The second highest contributor towards the domestic violence related cases that were reported in the province were coming from Tshwane, with the contribution of 25% with a total of 2,592."
