Gauteng crime down by 6.5% between October and December 2024

JOHANNESBURG - Crime in Gauteng has decreased by 6.5% between October and December 2024.
Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni released the third-quarter crime statistics in the province on Friday.
Mthombeni has hailed the province’s law enforcement agencies for the decrease but said Gauteng still contributed 26.5% to the country’s statistics for the third quarter of 2024/25.
South Africa’s festive season is the busiest in the country and often sees a spike in crimes, as provinces experience an increase in travellers.
Gauteng is no different as one of the busiest provinces in the country.
Despite this, the province has seen a decrease of 7,563 counts between October and December 2024.
In particular, the province saw an overall decrease of 4.7% in contact crimes, translating to 48,929 crimes in this category in 2024, compared to 51,327 in the same period in 2023.
Murder also decreased by 2.5% from 1,787 between October and December in 2023 to 1,741 in the same period in 2024.
However, two categories of contact crimes increased - that of attempted murder, which rose by 2.4%, translating to 1,820 with 43 more counts than in the same period in 2024, and common assault, which saw 670 more counts, increasing to 14,970.
