JOHANNESBURG - Attempted murder cases against women and children have increased sharply in the third quarter of 2024.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Thommy Mthombeni and the provincial portfolio committee on police briefed the media on the crime stats for the period in Sandton, Johannesburg.
A startling 129 cases of attempted murder against children were recorded between October and December last year.
Persons below 18 years of age are categorised as children and 80 more of them were almost killed in the last three months of 2024, representing a percentage difference of 163.3% from 2023.
Attempted murder cases against women also increased from 416 in 2023 to 436 in 2024 – marking an increase of 4.8%.
Murder against women, however, declined by 6.5% and 5.5% against children.
