JOHANNESBURG - At least three people have died following a shooting outside a Sandton restaurant on Thursday.
A man who tried to enter the establishment forced his way inside, but he was stopped. He then opened fire following an altercation between his bodyguards and security.
Police say two people died at the scene, while four others were wounded.
A quiet night turned chaotic at the centre housing restaurants and nightclubs. Blood stains could be seen on the ground on Friday morning with bullet shells covering key spots.
Crime scene tapes on the ground have been discarded after Thursday night’s shooting.
According to the South African Police Service, the establishment has a no-firearm policy.
This led to a shootout “between the man's bodyguards and securities,” the cops said.
“Two of the bodyguards were declared dead on scene while five victims (the man, two patrons, a CPF [community policing forum] member and a security guard) were taken to hospital with gunshot injuries and the man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital,” the statement further reads.
Preliminary investigation indicates the man behind the drama was previously arrested for a separate shooting in Sandton last year.
Moreover, vehicles with bullet holes are still parked at the centre and cleaners are washing bloodstains.
No arrests have been made.
