CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government has commended non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the health sector for playing a vital role in supporting tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS after the United States (US) halted funding for HIV programmes in South Africa.

The Western Cape government said a Provincial Council on AIDS and TB convened this week to assess the impact of the sudden termination of funding.

The provincial government has lost almost R360 million in healthcare funding since the Donald Trump administration withdrew the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Provincial Health and Wellness MEC Mireille Wenger said they recognise the pressure the loss of funding puts on the healthcare system and are taking urgent action to mitigate the impact.

Wenger said some of those actions include the fast-tracking digital prescriptions and ensuring that antiretroviral therapy remains available.

"If you were on treatment, please continue taking your medication and we are here to support you."
