JOHANNESBURG - Claims of money laundering, extortion, murder, and fraud remain in the spotlight as the trial against alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack and his 14 co-accused is set to continue in the Western Cape High Court.

The State will continue grilling Modack on his version of events related to claims that he allegedly ran a criminal enterprise, and is at the centre of the murder of anti-gang unit detective Charl Kinnear.

State prosecutor Greg Wolmarans raised suspicions over Empire Investment Cars, a company allegedly used by Modack and his co-accused to launder money.

Wolmarans questioned transferring the company's ownership from Modack’s brother, accused 13, Yaseen Modack, to accused 14, Adiel Mukadam.

“Your brother made over R1.3 million in salary alone?” asked Wolmarans.

“That’s what it shows, my lord,” Modack replied.

“Now that’s impressive. But this court must believe, and it says you were part of this, that in May 2019, Yaseen Modack would sell this goose that lays the golden eggs for R100,000? Good heavens, that’s less than his monthly salary,” said Wolmarans.

“That’s right, my lord,” Modack replied.

The trial is expected to continue Thursday morning.
