CAPE TOWN - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has launched a scathing attack against the United States for cutting aid to South Africa.

Malema said the only reason the US cut its funding under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is because of South Africa's stance on Palestine and its case against Israel.

Malema was taking part in a National Assembly debate on the decision by the US government to halt aid to South Africa and the country’s response.

Malema opened Thursday's debate, which he sponsored and wasted no time in attacking the US  for its decision to halt HIV/AIDS funding through the USAID programme.

He said the decision is part of a bigger plan to reverse the country’s transformation gains with the help of AfriForum.

"On 26 February 2025, the freeze became permanent, terminating funding indefinitely. The US aggression towards South Africa is nothing more than Israel's revenge for our moral stance in support of Palestine."

Malema also had a few words for President Donald Trump.

"Trump engages in transactional and manipulative relationships with the world like it is his backyard."

But Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said while South Africa might be affected, the country still buys its own ARVs for citizens.

He also said the US and Trump don't owe South Africa a cent.
