CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town is excited to open its electricity grid for private electricity sales and trading.

This follows the conclusion of a year-long electricity wheeling pilot project in the city.

The municipality said more than half a million kilowatt hours had already been generated and wheeled, across the city's grid during the pilot phase.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis explained: "Wheeling allows participants to buy electricity directly from producers or licensed energy traders using the existing municipal grid infrastructure. This is an exciting leap forward to build energy security in our city and diversify our electricity supplier base beyond Eskom."
