JOHANNESBURG - Trade union federation COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions) has issued a stern warning that disputes between union leaders across the board could reverse gains made in the labour sector.

COSATU is currently commemorating the 70th anniversary of its predecessor, the South African Congress of Trade Unions.

South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU) was dissolved pre-democracy, giving rise to what has now become the country’s biggest trade union federation.

During Wednesday's commemoration in Rivonia, union rivalry took centre stage.

The trade union movement in South Africa has battled to shake off conflict not just among unions but between federations as well.

COSATU's General Secretary Solly Phetoe said the dysfunction weakens the capacity to represent workers effectively.

"Internal fighting of leaders of trade union movements leaves workers alone on the ground."

He said the weakening of labour unions had far-reaching consequences for workers and for the economy.

"We cannot afford for these unions to deteriorate further."

After years of dwindling relevance and the loss of mobilising power - unions have now been called to unite and find common ground to address a range of socioeconomic challenges.
