JOHANNESBURG - Trade union federation Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) says more reforms are needed to address shortcomings in the labour market as the organisation takes stock of the labour sector.

COSATU is currently commemorating the 70th anniversary of its predecessor, the South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU).

SACTU is among trade union federations that shaped the anti-apartheid struggle, workers rights and economic transformation.

COSATU president Zingiswa Losi has joined some African National Congress (ANC) veterans in Rivonia for Wednesday's commemoration.

While Losi said great strides have been made to improve the labour sector, she admits much still needs to be done to meet all the conditions of the Freedom Charter.

"But we must be honest and admit that we have not sufficiently nurtured that vision.  The hate speech rampant on social media as well as the deep scars of spatial apartheid geography provide a mirror of how far we must still travel. Similarly, we are pained by the traumatic levels of gender-based and other violence that millions of women, girls, the elderly and persons with disabilities are subjected to on a daily basis."
