CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Safety and Security MMC, JP Smith has called for cool heads after taxi drivers demonstrated in the CBD on Tuesday.

A large group of protesting taxi drivers blockaded the entrance to the station deck, forcing several road closures in the vicinity.

The protest was sparked by a viral video showing a traffic officer putting a taxi driver in a chokehold position and wrestling him to the ground.

The man was being arrested for allegedly driving on the yellow lane on the N2 incoming yesterday morning.

Smith says the driver's actions of resisting arrest put his passengers and other road users at risk.
