JOHANNESBURG - Confusion over when he was due to appear in court has led to alleged July unrest instigator – Bonginkosi Khanyile – being re-arrested.
Khanyile was arrested and detained behind bars on Tuesday for failure to appear at the Durban Magistrates court on Monday.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party member is currently charged with incitement of public violence that led to deadly July 2021 unrests in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng.
Khanyile is due to appear in court on Wednesday to argue why his bail should not be revoked.
KZN National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the trial was supposed to commence on Monday.
“However, the accused failed to appear in court. The attorney on record for the accused did not know where the accused was. The matter stood down for some time, and upon resumption there was still no appearance from the accused.”
Khanyile’s spokesperson, Philani Nduli, says he was not fleeing from justice but arrived to court late.
