JOHANNESBURG - One of the owners of the embattled Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria has expressed confusion over why the establishment has been deemed non-compliant with several regulations.

Neo Moela, a shareholder and director at Zanzou, publicly addressed the issue on Tuesday after his popular nightclub was exposed for mistreating patrons.

The nightclub is in trouble following the circulation of disturbing videos online, showing its security staff physically and sexually assaulting patrons.

This incident has sparked public outrage, with many condemning the acts as violations of human rights against the patrons.

A day after Zanzou made headlines for assaulting patrons, the City of Tshwane revealed the nightclub was not in compliance with regulations set by the private security regulator, PSIRA.

It was also revealed that Zanzou was allegedly operating illegally as a nightclub, as it did not have the required zoning certificates and wasn’t in compliance with municipal by-laws.

One of the nightclub’s shareholders and directors, Neo Moela, who spoke through his lawyer Zola Majavu, said he has submitted all the documents that authorities claim the nightclub doesn’t have.

“Interestingly enough, the last batch of information that was requested from him was precisely the PSIRA documentation. That was done and it was done by him. The liquor board asked for certain information and documentation. That was done and it was done by him. The police asked for documentation that has to do with the layout of the building post their inspection. That was done.”

Majavu said his client is willing to work with police, to hold those involved in the torture of patrons at Zanzou accountable.
