JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says he has nothing to hide about the true state of the Joburg inner city, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s surprise visit this past weekend.

Ramaphosa joined law enforcement on their regular blitz to crack down on lawlessness in the CBD.

It’s understood Ramaphosa’s unusual visit also caught Morero by surprise, sparking claims the president was unhappy about the city’s administration.

While Morero admits there’s some cleaning up to do, he said the president’s visit was not an indictment on Joburg’s leaders.

“The coming of the president is to say ‘where is Joburg now, where are we going?’. Understanding that Johannesburg is the economic hub and it cannot be left alone to survive on its own without the interest of central government.”

Morero said Ramaphosa’s visit comes ahead of a planned meeting with city officials later this week.

“I suspect some people were probably whispering to him that something is happening in the inner city, so I suspect he said, 'let me go and see before I engage with these guys so they do not give me reports that are not factual'.”
