DURBAN - The Department of Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal has acquired land that will be used to build 85 houses for flood victims in Shallcross, south of Durban.

The houses will be homes to the 2022 flood victims.

More than 400 people died in the devastating floods, with thousands left displaced and homeless.

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said some of the victims will have permanent homes again.

“They have welcomed the initiative to build houses for the affected members of communities in various places in eThekwini. As you would know, in April 2022, we experienced floods that wreaked havoc and left a trail of destruction - houses were destroyed, and road infrastructure was also destroyed.”

ETHEKWINI AILING INFRASTRUCTURE WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO FIX

Mayor of eThekwini Cyril Xaba said it will take some time to fix the city’s ailing infrastructure, citing the recent damages caused by the floods.

The inclement weather left a trail of destruction to infrastructure in the city, with over 40 homes completely destroyed.

Public infrastructure like graveyards and roads also took a knock.

“That will take a moment of years for it to happen. I can’t promise that it will be an overnight thing,” Xaba told EWN on Monday.

“I can’t promise that we will have all the resources to fix our infrastructure for as long as we must contend with the intensity of floods in the city. I don’t know what else can be done, like I said, no city was able to build its infrastructure to cope with every single eventuality.”
