Jobs for barbers, hairstylists, cosmetologists in US to grow by 7% in 10 years
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these careers are the fastest-growing professions in the United States.
Zain Johnson (standing in for CapeTalk's Clarence Ford) speaks to the Digital Content Editor of Primedia Plus, Barbara Friedman, about trending online stories.
Listen below:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists are projected to grow by 7% in the next 10 years, making them the fastest-growing profession in the United States.
About 89,100 new openings for barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists are projected each year, on average, over the decade, the bureau adds.
Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labour force to retire.
Friedman says she's noticed this herself in parts of Cape Town.
"It made me think about Cape Town and I've noticed quite fancy, very cute barber shops are springing up... they offer grooming, eyebrow threading, beard whatevers and nice, old-fashioned barber chairs... the guys are often from various parts of the world, incredibly well-groomed and it's quite an experience," adds Friedman.
"So, I'm sure if we had to do a test here [Cape Town] there'd be growth too.
"It's definitely a profession that people should think seriously about," suggests Friedman.
