JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa says hosting Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo is aimed at strengthening the long-standing bond between the two countries.

This visit comes a month after Ramaphosa faced fierce criticism for attending Chapo’s inauguration.

Mozambique’s 5th president was sworn into office in January  following deadly protests that rocked his country  as opposition parties and some citizens disputed his electoral victory

Mozambique’s Daniel Chapo says his one-on-one with South Africa’s head of state allowed him to give President Cyril Ramaphosa an update on recent tensions.

He says cool temperatures have also allowed for an agreement on talks to be finalised – this will be signed along with the opposition this week.

In a statement, Ramaphosa says the two Southern-based countries must find a way to entrench political stability in Mozambique.

While lauding their long-standing relationship Ramaphosa also says today provided an opportunity for the two to turn a new page of cooperation at a political-diplomatic and economic level.
