JOHANNESBURG - Four case dockets of high treason are being probed by the Hawks in relation to claims made against President Cyril Ramaphosa and the African National Congress (ANC) to the United States (US) government.
On Monday, Hawks head General Godfrey Lebeya refrained from mentioning the names of the organisations being investigated, as they had yet to be formally charged.
“We have indeed received four case dockets against the entities that I do not want to start by mentioning their names, which is the normal practice in that we don’t mention the names of the entities before they are charged.”
Despite this, it is widely speculated that minority lobby groups, AfriForum and Solidarity, are at the centre of the Hawks probe.
This followed their recent calls for the US government to intervene in what they have described as clear moves by the ANC to sideline certain groups within the country.
AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel remains adamant that the ANC needs to be taken to task.
“It will cement our position because it will show that there are indeed ANC leaders who abuse their power to govern over sections of the population, while ANC leaders that have been implicated in corruption in the Zondo Commission have not been acted against.”
Solidarity CEO Dr Dirk Hermann believes the claims of high treason did not make any sense within the context of the law.
“The accusations of high treason against the delegation of the Solidarity movement are baseless, unfounded, and do not cause us any sleepless nights.”
