JOHANNESBURG - Alleged July unrest instigator Bonginkosi Khanyile will now have to convince the Durban High Court why his bail shouldn’t be permanently forfeited.

Khanyile was rearrested on Tuesday after his failure to appear in court for the commencement of his trial.

He is accused of inciting violence that led to the devastating July 2021 unrest in KwaZul-Natal (KZN)  and Gauteng.

NPA spokesperson in KZN Natasha Ramkission-Kara says Khanyile’s bail has been provisionally cancelled due to his failure to appear in court.

"A warrant of arrest was issued forthwith for his arrest. The accused was arrested during the morning of 04 March 2025  and he appeared in court on 04 March 2025. He is in custody and the bail enquiry is scheduled for tomorrow."
