It also investigated thousands of private entities who made false claims amounting to billions.

The SIU was briefing parliament finance watchdog SCOPA (Standing Committee on Public Accounts) today on its multi-year investigation into the UIF's temporary employer/employee relief scheme (ters) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
SIU chief operations officer, Leonard Lekgetho, says some companies made claims for employees who had long retired.
"In the main, the claim was done by other companies where those people were working. So, in most instances, those companies will just submit a list to the UIF even of the people that have retired or people that resigned many years ago."
