JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Science and Innovation Blade Nzimande has bemoaned educators who enrolled learners in math literacy for fear of compromising the school’s matric pass rate.
The minister expressed dissatisfaction with the inadequate number of maths and science learners, adding that schools were not producing enough learners who were equipped with the skills.
He addressed stakeholders in the basic education sector on Thursday, the first day of the lekgotla held in Boksburg.
The three-day gathering will continue seeing experts in the field exchange ideas and find ways to improve education in South Africa amid a myriad of other challenges.
Nzimande said the fear of maths and science must also be eradicated, particularly in black communities.
"But the one other big challenge that we have is to defeat the fear of maths and science especially in black communities in South Africa. Principals, stop deregistering children for maths and enrolling all of them in maths literacy because you want to increase the matric pass rate. You are harming me."
