CAPE TOWN - The National Prosecting Authority (NPA) has continued to cross-examine alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack about 25 counts of corruption against him.

Modack and 14 co-accused face 122 charges for various crimes related to allegedly operating a criminal enterprise.

Modack is being cross-examined to account for his evidence-in-chief, which was finalised earlier this week.

It's the State's case that Modack tried to bribe top cop Jeremy Vearey and his slain colleague, Charl Kinnear, to return six firearms confiscated from his home in 2017.

Modack claimed he paid more than R2 million to Vearey and Kinnear via a middleman, initially to have his guns returned, but also to prove they were corrupt and because he feared they wanted him dead.

Modack told the court the value of the confiscated firearms was about R200,000.

State prosecutor Greg Wolmarans on Thursday questioned Modack about why he spent more than R500,000 in legal fees on court applications to get the firearms back.

"You were prepared to spend more money than what the firearms were worth, but you wanted those firearms back."

Modack told the court the firearms were taken from him illegally and he wanted to get them back legally.
