JOHANNESBURG - Despite being trained for combat, the conditions in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have taken a toll on South Africa's soldiers.
This is according to the national secretary of the South African National Defence Union (SANDU), advocate Pikkie Greeff.
Greeff warned that the troops were vulnerable and were forced to rely on aid from United Nations (UN) agencies and rebel groups.
He added that the situation appeared bleak for the country's servicemen and women.
"They are trained for situations of combat, but in the end, every soldier is also a human being. If you’re being in a situation of virtually being a hostage or being trapped and not having control over the situation, not even having a fighting chance at the situation, that takes a different mental toll."
