JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Correctional Services is denying claims that there’s a food shortage at its correctional facilities.
The department has implemented amendments to a 12-day cycle meal plan to improve the nutritional well-being of inmates.
Officials said the revised plan had been developed in consultation with nutrition experts to ensure that health standards and the dietary needs of prisoners awee met.
Department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said it was not true that the plan was implemented to reduce costs.
"Correctional Services remains on course with the amendments to the 12-day cycle meal plan to enhance the nutritional value provided to all inmates.
"It is also important to state that, as a department, we firmly reject any false reports suggesting that there are food shortages in our facilities."
