JOHANNESBURG - Build One South Africa (BOSA) is calling on the justice minister to fulfil her promise of releasing the sex offenders list on Friday.

In January, Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi promised to reveal the names of all people convicted of sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) at the end of February 2025.

BOSA picketed at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus where the minister was set to participate in an event.

"As I got into the portfolio, one of the issues reported was the need for the department to release the register, to make it public, of those who have been sentenced and convicted of GBV to protect our children. I have agreed we will release this. My time frame is before the end of February 2025. The register will be public," Minister Kubayi said.

Since January’s promise, Kubayi’s office said she would no longer be able to meet Friday’s deadline because of privacy issues.

BOSA deputy leader Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster said the minister was playing politics with a serious matter.

"We have a minister who was merely trying to placate a serious issue instead of actually trying to address it and giving it a proper rollout plan instead of how it was going to happen."

A new deadline for the release of the list is yet to be announced.
