CAPE TOWN - State prosecutors on Thursday continued to punch holes in the testimony of underworld kingpin, Nafiz Modack.

Modack and 14 others face 122 charges for various crimes including murder, extortion, fraud and money laundering.

Modack is being cross-examined this week to account for his evidence-in-chief.

State prosecutor Greg Wolmarans questioned why Modack continued to make alleged extortion payments to Jeremy Vearey after the former top cop had his wife arrested in October 2018.

Evidence shows Modack made various payments amounting to more than R1 million to a middleman before and after his wife's arrest.

Judge Robert Henney told Modack he found it strange why, after making all those payments, Vearey still arrested his wife.

Modack told the court he continued making the payments because at that time he feared Vearey was behind the murder of his attorney Pete Mihailik and the attempted murder of his friend, alleged gang boss Colin Booysen.

The Hawks' evidence shows the payments went to the middleman but never ended up with Vearey.

The trial continues.
