JOHANNESBURG – African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said that the party was fully prepared to defend itself against members dissatisfied with the leadership changes in its Gauteng structure.

On Wednesday, Mbalula announced the appointment of a provincial task team led by both party veterans, Amos Masondo and Panyaza Lesufi.

The leadership changes were implemented due to the ANC’s dismal electoral performance in the province during the 2024 general elections.

The ANC brought in senior and veteran leaders to help rebuild the party in the lead-up to the 2026 local government elections.

While there’ve been suggestions that some in the party might legally challenge the leadership changes, Mbalula told them to "bring it on".

"It’s possible that people can litigate. We’ll defend our decision. Anytime, we’ll defend it. There are basis for defending it."

Mbalula said the focus was now on the 2026 local government elections, where it hoped to recover lost ground.
