CPUT SRC praised for working with university management to resolve student accommodation shortage

CAPE TOWN - The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)’s Student Representative Council (SRC) has been praised for working with university management to resolve the lack of student accommodation.
Together with officials from the Department Higher Education and university management, a temporary agreement was reached.

Minister of Higher Education Nobuhle Nkabane visited the campus on Tuesday to assess the situation for the upcoming academic year.
She was dissatisfied, prompting the department to provide students with temporary accommodation until the university resolved the issue.
Two weeks ago, there were protests at the CPUT’s District Six campus.
Students were unhappy about not having received accommodation for the upcoming academic year.
On Tuesday, after an oversight visit to the CPUT District Six campus, students who were still without accommodation were offered a temporary solution.
CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley explained: "Eighty students will be placed in temporary accommodation this evening and for a period of 5 nights.
"This follows a visit from Higher Education Minister Dr Nobuhle Nkabane on a site visit to the university’s District Six campus."
The department has given the university less than a week to resolve the accommodation issue.
